The Secret World Of Child Brides
on 27 October 2012Editors Note:
Stephanie Sinclair has documented the global issue of child marriage for nearly a decade and the ongoing project has thus far led her to Nepal, India, Ethiopia and Yemen. Stephanie Sinclair and Jessica Dimmock will continue to work with the UN Population Fund on the issue of child marriage around the world and more features will be posted to this site as the project develops.
Every year, throughout the world, millions of young girls are
forced into marriage. Child marriage is outlawed in many countries
and international agreements forbid the practice yet this tradition
still spans continents, language, religion and caste.
Over an eight-year period, photographer Stephanie Sinclair has
investigated the phenomenon of child marriage in India, Yemen,
Afghanistan, Nepal and Ethiopia. Her multimedia presentation,
produced in association with National Geographic, synthesizes this
body of work into a call to action.
