Evros

on 13 May 2011 by Giovanni Cocco

VII Mentor Giovanni Cocco gives us a look at the river Evros, on the border between Turkey and Greece, it has become the main entrance for about 75 percent of illegal immigrants arriving into the European Union. Over 120,000 migrants and political asylum seekers reached Greece last year, more than 40,000 of them crossing the border with Turkey. After the debated bilateral agreements, undersigned by Spain with Senegal and Mauritania, and those signed between Italy and Libya, blocked the traditional routes of the Central and Western Mediterranean, Asian and African migrants increasingly use the river Evros to reach the European Union. Furthermore, Greece's economical crisis is making the migrants issue overwhelming for the government. In an effort to manage the inflow of illegal migrants, the Greek government intends to build a 12 km wall of iron and wire along its land border.
